What I found in medical school is that if you are good at treating your body and mind poorly, that
will be amplified ten times more as you learn to sacrifice your own health in the service of others. You
learn to stay up all night at least every other night on-call, healing people, drinking caffeine by the
truckload, and of course not taking the time to exercise or eat right. Chances are you don’t even have the
time to go to a doctor’s appointment if you get sick when you are a medical student or resident
trainee.
I was so tired I could almost forget my six figure student debt, my unpaid bills, my $1.90/hour
salary that looked pitiful in the face of that debt, my utter void of a social life, and I just tried as
hard as I could to pay attention to the cases being presented.
And the cycle continued. Work a lot, sleep a little, and worry about money in between.
A year later, I entered training in an Anesthesia residency program. On a daily basis, we were
told how very wrong we were to ask questions, to question the wisdom of authorities on such things as using
more dangerous medications simply because they were cheaper.
Caught in some Kafka-like story of career misery, I slogged along, rising
at 4:30 am, to catch a bus (I couldn’t afford a car, now years after graduation form medical school), and could
look forward to returning home after midnight. Seven days a week, fifty weeks a year.
Until one morning I awoke to the blaring sound of a TV alarm, took in three cans of caffeine to
try to wake up, as I did every morning of the past year.
I went to step onto the bus and couldn't. The stress was
overwhelming.
If I didn’t I’d be attacked or fired for sure. I was trapped. I had let myself be tricked into
thinking for all those years that I was not allowed to take care of myself. That to get a good night’s
sleep EVERY night is what ALL human beings have a right to. To eat right. To exercise. To have the time to
make social connections. To dream of a good life and actually make efforts at making that real.
And there I was, not able to get onto the bus while the driver tapped his wheel impatiently, and
not quite able to stay off of it.
I had enough. I turned away, walked home, quit the job and the
training program, and went into the longest, most blissful sleep of my life. I was “allowed” to be a normal human
being with a normal life. I was “allowed” to live.
And only I could be the one to “allow” it.
I was the single, the only fit judge of what a good and right life could be for me.
After a long while deciding what to do next, I found that psychiatry would be a perfect fit for
me.
A way to be both an author, but also still a physician who values
truth above advertising, and a man who keeps promises to the most important people in the business of medicine:
patients.
Even as I struggled to understand my own experiences with stress, I found that there really was a
solution for every problem.
That solution for all people with stress or anxiety is NEVER just
